Blue Fire Is Real
Sulfuric gas vents at up to 600C and burns electric-blue, with flames of about 5 metres — visible only in darkness.

Entrance Fee
Foreign visitors pay about IDR 100,000 on weekdays and IDR 150,000 on weekends at the Paltuding gate.

Medical Certificate
Required since January 2024, obtained within 7 days of your hike in Banyuwangi or at the Paltuding medical post.

First-Friday Closure
Kawah Ijen closes entirely on the first Friday of each month for the Clean Friday Ijen conservation day.

Gas Mask Essential
Sulfur dioxide severely irritates eyes and lungs. Tours include a mask; renting at the gate costs around IDR 45,000.

The trail opens around 2 am, trekking starts about 3 am and the blue fire is best near 4 am.

Typically 5C to 15C before sunrise, and strong wind can make it feel near freezing.

The world’s largest highly acidic crater lake, with a pH often reported near 0.5. Never touch the water.
