Kawah Ijen Blue Fire Night Trek — Guided Midnight Hike to the Electric Blue Flames

A guided night hike to the electric-blue sulfur flames in the crater of Mount Ijen, then dawn over the turquoise acid lake — the honest, no-sugar-coating version of the Ijen blue fire night trek.

The trek

What the Kawah Ijen Blue Fire Night Trek Actually Is

Kawah Ijen is an active volcano in East Java with a 1 km-wide turquoise acid lake. At night, escaping sulfur gas ignites as it meets oxygen — the “electric blue flames”.

Real, but not a guaranteed show

The blue fire is ongoing natural combustion. Some nights it’s bright and obvious; others it’s faint, smoky or partly hidden by cloud and wind.

  • Start hiking around midnight–1:00 a.m.
  • Walk 3 km uphill to the crater rim
  • Descend ~250–300 vertical metres in a gas mask
  • Climb back to the rim for sunrise over the lake

Hotel to sunrise

Typical Night Schedule: From Hotel Pick-Up to Sunrise

Our most common plan for guests staying near Banyuwangi. Timings shift with your start point, park rules and season.

  1. 01

    23:00–00:00

    Pick-up & drive

Driver and guide meet you; 1–1.5 hours to Paltuding, with a briefing on route and gas-mask use.

  2. 02

    00:30–01:00

    Prepare at Paltuding

Tickets and permits handled, hot tea at the warungs, final check of headlamp, layers and mask.

  3. 03

    01:00–02:30

    Hike to the rim

About 3 km and ~500 m of gain; the middle part feels like a long staircase.

  4. 04

    02:30–03:30

    Descent to the blue fire

If rangers open access: ~250–300 m down loose rock, mask on, no lingering in thick fumes.

  5. 05

    03:30–06:00

    Climb back & sunrise

40–60 minutes back up, then dawn over the milky turquoise lake — light changes fast from 05:00.

  6. 06

    06:00–09:00+

    Descend & onward

About 1–1.5 hours down past coffee plantations, then hotel, Ketapang ferry or onward transfer.

Fitness & difficulty

Is This Trek For You?

If you can walk uphill steadily for 1.5–2 hours on uneven ground, you can usually complete the night hike with a licensed guide.

  • Regular walkers

Trekkers who manage 8–10 km walks on hills and are used to early starts and broken sleep.

  • Fit teenagers

Teens with good fitness and patience — we usually suggest 12+.

  • Reconsider the descent

Asthma, heart disease, late pregnancy or bad knees: we don’t recommend going down into the crater.

  • Rim-only option

Hike to the rim, stay above the crater and watch the glow from a distance before sunrise.

Safety: Sulfur Gas, Night Hiking & Licensed Local Guides

This is not an amusement park queue. There is real risk, and respecting it is what keeps you safe.

  • Sulfur gas

With the wrong wind it burns eyes and throat. Gas masks are mandatory for any crater descent.

  • Loose, steep terrain

Sharp rocks, dust and narrow sections inside the crater — plus bottlenecks on busy nights.

  • A guide who reads the gas

An officially registered local guide decides if it’s safe to descend and knows the quickest exits.

If rangers close crater access, we switch to rim-only trekking. Follow your guide, even if it means giving up the blue fire that night.

From Bali

Bali Turn-Around vs Overnight in Banyuwangi

Ijen blue fire from Bali is possible, but longer and more tiring than starting from Java.

Without hype

What You Actually See: Blue Flames and Crater Lake

Brightness depends on wind, cloud and how many headlamps are around.

  • Strong nights

Deep electric blue at the base, flames licking around yellow sulfur, some flares several metres high.

  • Weaker nights

Smaller, patchy flames or a diffuse blue glow behind thick white smoke.

  • The crater lake

At ~2,148 m, pH can be below 1 — milky turquoise at dawn. Never swim or touch the water.

  • Sunrise views

Steam plumes, sheer walls and far ridges on clear mornings; cloudy nights can hide the sunrise.

What you bring

Best Time and What to Bring for an Ijen Night Trek

Blue fire can be visible year-round, but the experience changes by season. Nature is not a timetable.

Seasons

  • 01 Dry season (roughly May–October) Clearer nights, drier trails, sharper flames — but more visitors and rim nights near 5°C.
  • 02 Wet season (roughly November–April) Fewer people midweek, but clouds, mud and occasional access restrictions.
  • 03 Flames are the priority? Pick a dry-season window with some date flexibility.

What to bring

  • Grippy shoes Closed trail or hiking shoes. No sandals.
  • Warm layers 5–10°C at the rim. Fleece and shell.
  • Gloves & beanie Especially July–September.
  • Small backpack Water, snacks, camera, layers.
  • Medication Inhaler, antihistamines, prescriptions.
  • Snacks Something your stomach accepts at 3 a.m.

Leave at home

Drones without a permit, strong perfume or sprays, and loose, dangling items that catch on rock.
